How to Send an SMS to a Mobile Phone From a Computer

Computer screen showing a message delivered to a mobile phone

When you type a message in a web page and press Send, it does not travel to the phone directly. It passes through an SMS gateway, a service connected to mobile operators that converts internet messages into the SMS format used on mobile networks.

The journey of a web SMS

  1. Your browser sends the message and recipient to the website.
  2. The website checks your account, balance and security rules.
  3. An SMS provider (the gateway) receives the request through an API.
  4. The operator network of the recipient receives the message from the provider, possibly through other carriers in between.
  5. The phone displays it in the normal messages app.

Each hop can add delay. Premium routes with direct operator connections are fast and predictable. Cheaper routes pass through more intermediaries and are sometimes slower or filtered.

What the recipient sees

Usually a normal text from a short sender ID or a number. In some countries and on certain networks the only deliverable format is a Flash SMS: it pops up on the screen and may not be saved in the inbox. This affects only a small share of Globfone traffic, but it explains why a recipient may say they saw a message flash by.

Getting better results

  • Choose the right country and remove the leading zero from the number.
  • Keep the message in one segment (see message length and encoding).
  • Avoid links and promotional wording, which spam filters dislike.
  • If delivery fails repeatedly for one destination, wait and try later and check the service status.
  • Tell us about successful deliveries using the feedback prompt; it helps rank routes.

Who pays

The recipient never pays. The cost is covered by the free Credits in your account, which is funded by sponsors and ads. For regular messaging or higher reliability you can move to Premium, which uses a broader choice of SMS operators.

Frequently asked questions

Does the recipient need an app or an account?

No. The message arrives as a normal text in the phone's messaging app, whatever the phone or operator.

Can the recipient reply?

Replies are not guaranteed to reach you, so add another way to contact you (an email or a number) to the message if you need an answer.

Why does my message arrive late?

Messages pass through several networks. Delays of a few minutes happen, mostly on lower-cost routes; if a message does not arrive after a while, check the service status and try again.

Can I send to a landline?

Standard SMS needs a mobile number. Some operators convert texts to a voice message for landlines, but this is not available for all destinations.
