The Story of Globfone: From Version 1.0 to Today

Early concept sketch of the Globfone idea

Globfone began as an experiment: could calling and texting work from a web page, with no software to install? For roughly fifteen years the answer has been yes, and the project has changed a lot along the way.

Version 1.0: the idea

The first version put two things on a page: a dialler and a text box. It was built on the belief that there is "love in sharing", that communication should be open to anyone with a browser. Early users joined the beta around 2011, and a core group has stayed with the project ever since.

Growth: more tools in the same browser

Over the years the project added peer-to-peer video chat and direct file sharing on top of calls and SMS. Plug-ins such as Flash and Java disappeared as WebRTC became the standard, which made everything simpler for users and for the team.

The rebuild

The old platform suffered from busy lines and connection problems. It was rebuilt on modern VoIP infrastructure, with an upgraded WebPhone that supports DTMF tones and gives you control over your microphone and headphones. SMS delivery improved through a wider operator network and smarter routing, though quality can still vary where low-cost routes are used.

Why you now verify your account

For years Globfone worked without registration. Abuse and new legal requirements made that impossible to sustain, so a three-level credibility system was introduced. It keeps spam and fraud out and helps ensure free capacity goes to genuine users.

Free and Premium

The free tier is supported by advertising, sponsors and small Mini-Boost Credits. Premium adds prepaid, ad-free calling with no daily limits and wider coverage. Both share the same account.

Principles that did not change

  • Start in the browser. No downloads, no plug-ins, no installers.
  • Make it simple. One page for one task, with clear steps.
  • Keep a free tier. Communication should be open to as many people as possible.
  • Protect the service. Verification keeps spam out so the free tier can survive.

What is next

New mobile apps are in planning, and the platform gains new tools such as P2P chat and Ask AI. Follow the service status page for news about availability.
