OnePlus 8 Revisited: Specs, Strengths and Whether It Is Still Worth Using

OnePlus 8 smartphone on a table

The OnePlus 8 arrived in April 2020 as the more affordable sibling of the OnePlus 8 Pro. It brought 5G, a fast 90 Hz display and a flagship processor to a price that undercut most rivals, and it earned a reputation as the phone for people who wanted speed without paying for extras. Several years later it is a useful case study: which parts of a phone age well, and which do not? If you own one, or you are looking at a used unit, this look back will help you decide whether it still deserves a place in your pocket.

Design and display

The glass back with a curved edge and the narrow punch-hole camera gave the phone a premium feel for its price. The screen is the highlight: 90 Hz makes scrolling and animations look noticeably smoother than the 60 Hz panels that were common on mid-range phones. Colours are strong, brightness is good outdoors and the in-display fingerprint reader is quick. The phone is tall and narrow, which suits one-handed use better than many of today's larger models, although the glass is slippery and a case is a good idea.

Performance

The Snapdragon 865 was the top Qualcomm chip of 2020, and it is still fast enough for everyday life: web browsing, messaging, navigation, streaming and casual games run without effort. Where it shows its age is in the newest, most demanding games and in long gaming sessions, where the chip throttles sooner than current flagships. For communication tasks, which are light, it is far more than enough. A browser tool such as the Globfone WebPhone or a P2P video chat runs smoothly in Chrome on this phone.

Cameras

The 48 MP main camera takes sharp, well-balanced photos in daylight and decent ones indoors. The ultrawide lens is useful for groups and landscapes but loses detail at the edges. The 2 MP macro sensor is mostly a marketing feature. Low-light photos and night video are the weakest area compared with phones from the last two or three years, and there is no telephoto lens. Video is capable up to 4K at 60 fps, with good stabilisation in 1080p.

Battery and charging

A 4,300 mAh battery was good for a full day of mixed use when the phone was new, and Warp Charge 30T could fill it in roughly an hour, which was a headline feature. After several years of charge cycles most original batteries have lost a noticeable share of their capacity, so a unit with its original battery may now need a top-up in the afternoon. A battery replacement at a repair shop is inexpensive and brings back most of the original endurance. The absence of wireless charging matters only if you already own a wireless charger.

Software and updates

OxygenOS was known for being clean, fast and close to stock Android, with useful extras such as a good gaming mode and flexible display settings. The OnePlus 8 received several major Android updates after launch, but its official support period has ended or is ending. A phone that no longer gets security patches is a risk for banking, work accounts and private data, so check the current patch level in Settings, About phone before you rely on it for anything sensitive.

How the OnePlus 8 compares

ModelMain difference
OnePlus 8 ProLarger 120 Hz display, wireless charging, official water-resistance rating, better camera system
OnePlus 8TFaster 65 W charging, slightly newer software and a 120 Hz display
OnePlus NordLower price, mid-range chip, similar software

Buying a used OnePlus 8: a checklist

  • Check battery health or ask for a recent battery replacement.
  • Test the speakers, microphones, both cameras and the fingerprint reader.
  • Look for screen burn-in or green tinting on dark backgrounds.
  • Confirm the phone is unlocked from any account and carrier, and ask for the IMEI to check that it is not blocked.
  • Check the security patch date and decide whether that is acceptable for your use.

Is it still a good second phone?

For calls, messaging, browsing and video chat it is still capable, and it makes an excellent backup or travel phone. You do not even need a SIM with a calling plan: with a headset you can place a call from the browser with Globfone's free calling, send a text with the SMS tool, or start a video room in P2P chat. If you plan to use it as your only phone for banking and work, choose a model that still receives security updates instead.

Gaming, heat and sustained performance

In short bursts the Snapdragon 865 handles every game on the Play Store. Over a long session the phone warms up and the chip lowers its speed to protect the battery, so frame rates drift down after twenty or thirty minutes in the most demanding titles. A phone case that lets heat out, a lower graphics setting and keeping the phone out of direct sun make a real difference. For casual games, streaming and video calls there is no thermal problem at all.

Sound, haptics and everyday details

  • Stereo speakers. The earpiece doubles as a second speaker, so videos and calls on speaker sound fuller than on many single-speaker phones.
  • Alert slider. A physical switch on the side moves between ring, vibrate and silent without looking at the screen, a OnePlus signature that many owners miss on other phones.
  • Vibration motor. The linear motor gives crisp haptics for typing and notifications.
  • No headphone jack. You need USB-C or Bluetooth headphones; a USB-C adapter costs very little.

The display in more detail

The AMOLED panel shows deep blacks, supports HDR10+ and can switch between 60 and 90 Hz. The higher refresh rate uses more power, so if battery life is a concern you can choose 60 Hz in the display settings. The in-display fingerprint reader works well in normal conditions but can be slower with wet fingers. A screen protector is a good idea after several years of use because the glass scratches over time.

Cameras in different light

SituationWhat to expect
DaylightSharp, natural photos with good dynamic range
IndoorsDecent detail; noise appears in dim rooms
NightNight mode helps, but it is behind current phones
UltrawideFun for groups and buildings; softer corners
Video4K at 60 fps; best stabilisation at 1080p

Software features worth knowing

OxygenOS adds practical features on top of Android: a reading mode that turns the screen to greyscale, a Zen mode that locks you out of the phone for a set time, a gaming mode that blocks notifications, app cloning for two accounts, and a very flexible display and theme settings. Recent software is more integrated with other OnePlus and Oppo code than in 2020, but the phone remains fast and uncluttered compared with many brands.

Problems owners reported

  • Some units showed a slight green or pink tint on dark backgrounds at low brightness.
  • Battery drain that increased after a major update for a few users.
  • Camera app slowness on very full storage.

Most of these can be improved with a restart, clearing the cache or a factory reset, but when you buy used it is worth testing the screen on a dark photo and checking battery health.

Alternatives today

If you want a phone that is still supported, look for a mid-range model from the last two years. Google Pixel "a" phones, Samsung Galaxy A and S series and newer OnePlus Nord phones all offer several years of security updates and better cameras than the OnePlus 8, although the OnePlus 8 can have a faster processor and a better screen than some of them for the same used price.

Frequently asked questions

Does the OnePlus 8 support eSIM?

No. It has two nano-SIM slots. If you need a second number, you can use a second physical SIM, or place calls from the browser with a calling service. See eSIM explained for the alternatives.

Is it waterproof?

The standard model does not have an official water-resistance rating on most variants, so avoid water and use a case in rain.

Does it have wireless charging?

No. Fast wired charging is the main charging feature.

How long will it get updates?

Official support has ended or is ending, so check the patch level before using it for sensitive tasks.

Bottom line

The OnePlus 8 is a fast, pleasant phone that has outlived its update schedule. It is still a good choice as a backup, travel or media phone, and a weak choice as the only device for banking and work.
