The Globfone Rap: A Brand Video from the Early Days

Globfone rap video thumbnail

This video is one of the first creative experiments around the Globfone brand. The goal was to explain a free online phone in a format people would remember: a short rap about calling, texting and chatting from a browser. It was made for a time when most people had never heard of calling a mobile phone from a web page.

Why a rap?

Telecom services are hard to explain in a sentence, and nobody shares a pricing table. A catchy video introduced the idea quickly and reached people who would never have read a manual. It also gave the project a personality: friendly, a little playful and open to everyone.

What the video does not show

Globfone has changed a lot since then. The calling platform was rebuilt, verification protects the free service from abuse and P2P chat and file sharing are now first-class tools. For a current overview read Globfone services at a glance or the story of Globfone.

A quick history of Globfone's videos

Over the years the project has published tutorials, walkthroughs and testimonials. The rap came first as a fun introduction; later videos explain how each tool works. You can find them linked from the pages for calls, the P2P chat walkthrough and the student testimonial.
